CAW president threatens to take down General Motors
Jun 5, 2007
Buzz Hargrove, president of the Canadian Auto Workers union, is talking tough to GM in hopes of getting a commitment to invest in their transmission plant in Windsor, ON. GM recently made a decision to build a new 6-speed automatic transmission in St. Catharines, ON, leaving the Windsor facility with no known future product plans.
Hargrove is pledging Canada wide strikes that will cripple GM if they do not come up with a solution for the Windsor plant.
"They made the decision to put the transmission in St. Catharines, and they say publicly if they don't get the right deal in St. Catharines it will not come to Canada, therefore eliminating Windsor," said Hargrove. "I say to them, you better find a . . . product for Windsor or we'll take all of the General Motors corporation down in September 2008. General Motors workers have earned the commitment, especially in Windsor."
Nothing like a threat to usher in good will from the other side.
