Ryerson University VW Bug Push

So what exactly is a "Bug Push"? Well, it involves roughly 30 Ryerson University engineering students pushing an 800-pound vintage Volkswagen Beetle for 24 consecutive hours on campus. So why are these students subjecting themselves to this king of torture?

Find out after the jump.

The University students are hoping to raise $1,500 to help SickKids Hospital, a local Toronto hospital, by the time the event ends today at noon.

The engineering students fixed up the car and painted logos on it as an education component. At least three people are required to push the 1955 automobile, while another steers.

“It’s like pushing up against a wall for a lot of hours,” said Chris Lopez, 23, who has been taking part in the event for the past five years. “It’s tiring, but you get used to it, and then your body just wants to give out. But that’s what all the energy drinks are for. There’s no such thing as a good night’s sleep for a 24-hour Bug Push.”

This is the eighth year the event has drawn the attention of media and students. They raised $2,000 last year, bringing the overall total to more than $16,000. This year, the university has chipped in $1,000 on top of what the students earn.
