Ottawa-based biofuel powers Ferrari F1 team to victory
Mar 16, 2010
Be proud Canadian Formula 1 fans. A biofuel extracted from Eastern Ontario straw was in the gas tank of both Ferrari's as they finished in the top two spots at the Formula One race in Bahrain on Sunday.
Shell and Iogen Corporation, a biotechnology company based out of Ottawa, ON, have been working together to develop the fuel. According to Iogen's website, they are a world leader in technology to produce cellulosic ethanol, a fully renewable, advanced biofuel.
Unlike other forms of ethanol, cellulosic ethanol uses waste product and does not divert crops intended for the food chain.
The fuel, which was used for the first time in an F1 race this past weekend, will be used by Ferrari for the remainder of the season.
