Porsche plays king of the hill with new 911 Turbo S
Feb 8, 2010
500 horsepower. Is that a number that you could be satisfied with? It's a pretty nice round number, has a certain ring to it, and hints at what is probably a pretty quick vehicle. Bah, commonplace! And, if you're Porsche, 500 horsepower is so 2009 and this is a brand new year/decade, so what better way to ring in a new era than with a brand new trump card?
While the Porsche 911 Turbo is regarded in most circles as a capable and fearsome automobile, it's got a new big brother known as the Porsche 911 Turbo S that will come around your neighbourhood and terrorize your grandmother, just because it caught you looking at it.
So how do you improve on the ironic perfection that was the 911 Turbo? Well first, you cover it in gold, turn the twin turbos up to eleven to create an additional 30 horsepower, which in turn lowers the 0-100 time to a scant 3.3 seconds on its way to 200 km/h in less than eleven seconds. Paul Walker would be pleased. Despite the extra power, Porsche says the Turbo S uses no more fuel than its weaker brother at 11.4 litres/100 kms. That is impressive, says the panel of judges.
Next, how about all those pricey options in the 911 Turbo that you want but can't seem to justify? What about if those things just...came with the car? Surely you jest. Carbon ceramic brakes? 7-speed PDK? Launch control with the Sport-Chrono package? Dynamic Bending Lights? ALL STANDARD?!? Where do I sign? Wait, what's the catch? Oh, the base price is way higher? Somehow I never saw that coming...
Porsche Canada hasn't actually announced pricing yet, but it will run somewhere between than the 911 Turbo's $165,000 entry price and much, much more than that. Trust me. Euro base pricing has been listed as 145,400, which translates directly into $213,468.81 CAD. You can never really go according to the direct conversion, but still, ouch. Better start going through the couch cushions for spare change, because dealers will be getting the Turbo S coupe and cabriolet starting May 2010.
