All new 2011 Sonata only $150 more than 2010 model

The fully redesigned 2011 Hyundai Sonata has been priced at $22,649 for the Canadian market, which is only $150 more than the outgoing model.

That's not bad considering the 2011 is larger and better equipped than last year. It's also impressive considering the new Sonata is the only car in its class with a direct-injected 4-cylinder engine as standard equipment. In fact, I believe (tell me if I am wrong) that it's the least expensive car in any class to have direct injection standard.

But should you want an automatic transmission you're going to have to dig deep into your wallet.

You'll need to find an extra $1,600 for Hyundai's new 6-speed auto. That's considerably more than the class norm considering the Accord, Mazda6 and Subaru Legacy only require an extra $1,200 for an auto. At least it's a new 6-speed unit and not the 5-speed from last year.

"The Sonata is an important vehicle for our brand," said John Vernile, vice president, marketing, Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. "We know the sleek styling is going to grab a lot of attention, so we're pleased to offer pricing that makes it attainable."

The Sonata joins the Honda Accord as being considered a large car according to the EPA.

The Volkswagen Passat is arguably in the same class (although pricier) and has the 2.0T engine with direct injection and Turbo.
