What's up with exterior paint colour names?

This weekend I was reading a review of the 2011 Toyota Camry (link) and before the review even began a comment came up about why Toyota called the colour of the tester Sandy Beach Metallic. Why not beige?

Well that got me thinking, what are some of the more interesting exterior paint colour names on the market today?

Some examples after the jump.

  • Sandy Beach Metallic: Toyota Camry
  • Blue sensation Pearl: Honda Fit
  • Airstream: Nissan Murano
  • Nordschleife Grey, Tsukuba Red: Hyundai Genesis:
  • Blue jeans Pearl: Kia Sorento
  • Olive Grey: Kia Rio
  • Detonator Yellow Clearcoat: Jeep Wrangler
  • Cognac Metallic: Porsche Panamera ($4,200 option)
  • Truffle Mica: Lexus IS250
  • Magic Blue: Volvo XC90
  • Anaconda Green Pearlcoat: Dodge Viper
  • Toxic orange pearlcoat: Dodge Viper
  • Thunder Gray ChromaFlair: Cadillac CTS-V

And my personal favourite name:

  • Black: Chevrolet Camaro

Nice and simple. Share your favourite names in the comment section below.

I think the vehicle companies are struggling to come up with new names for grey and black. The lack of colour in the current automotive world is downright depressing.

Many years ago I sold auto insurance for a broker in BC; I was completing paperwork for a woman picking up her Cadillac; On the Bill of Sale, the car was listed as "Champagne" -- she was not happy that ICBC policy limited us to labelling the vehicle brown for the purposes of insurance and plating...

VW has 3 different blacks. Black, Deep Black and Nocturne Black. There's also a Mocha Brown and a Toffee Brown. Delicious.

what is also odd, why do they call the same colour different names in different countries, specifically between US and Canada.

All I know is when the police pulled me over with a BOLO for a black chev Z71 , he looked at mine took my ownership and said "What colour is this thing" and I said "Dark Cherry Metalic" he then proceded to tell that on the ownership it says RED and I said talk to MTO they typed it in that way, and he then proceded to tell me to get it changed, and I said I don't fill out the paperwork at the dealership and MTO doesnt ask,and as far as I understand they only have so much room to type in colour names so if it looks like red its red , and so on , so why don't they just call it what it is 'A COLOUR'
