Toyota Floormatgate not over yet

When many were ready to dismiss Toyota's stuck throttle and unintended acceleration investigation as being the product of improperly fitted floor mats, in lock step with Toyota USA, Toyota Canada has launch a recall for "Occurrence Of Sticking Accelerator Pedal On Select Toyota Division Vehicles". What is it now?

It seems the pedal mechanism itself could be at fault. It seems that in certain rare conditions, the pedal may return to closed throttle or return more slowly than usual. A remedy is being rolled out in the same way the last problem is being addressed, by a voluntary recall. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

This is in addition to the recall to reshape the pedal to reduce the risk of entrapment by improperly installed floor mats. Toyota's quality guru had reported earlier in the week that Toyota would take a hard look not only at the design, but at how the consumer uses the vehicle, in this case, with non Toyota floor mats.

It seems that Lexus and Scion models are excluded, but Autonorth could not confirm if these models used different part numbers for their pedal mechanism. Affected models include:

-2009-2010 RAV4,
-2009-2010 Corolla,
-2009-2010 Matrix,
-2005-2010 Avalon,
-2007-2010 Camry,
-2010 Highlander,
-2007-2010 Tundra,
-2008-2010 Sequoia

Owners will get letters and should be familiar with safety practices to stop the vehicle in this unlikely event.
