Magna International working with Ford on electric vehicle
Jan 11, 2010
It's pretty obvious that the auto industry is transitioning to more fuel efficient vehicles. And with OEMs trying to meet the demands of fuel conscious consumers, auto parts suppliers are putting pen to paper in an effort to meet the demands of auto manufacturers.
Magna International, which is one of the most diversified parts suppliers in the business, is hard at work becoming a leader in electric and hybrid vehicle components.
Magna has partnered with Ford Motor Company to develop the Ford BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle), which has the capability to run 160km on electric power. The vehicle will be on sale at some point in 2011, although production will be limited.
Production in the first year will be between 5,000 and 10,000 units, although that could increase with time.
Magna has consolidated their electrification capabilities into their E-Car Systems business unit.
"We have been enhancing our capability in this area by developing systems such as electric motors and motor control units, chargers, electric pumps, electric drivetrain and lithium ion battery packs" said Magna co-CEO Don Walker.
Walker has also confirmed that Magna International is in talks with other automakers regarding future electric vehicle projects.
