Can't afford a new BMW 335d? Buy a 1986 524td
Sep 9, 2009
The 2009 335d is not the first BMW with a diesel engine to be sold in North America. In 1985 and 1986, shoppers interested in a German diesel sedan had an alternative to Mercedes-Benz in the form of the 524td.
The 524td was powered by a 2.4 litre turbo diesel 4-cylinder engine, which is rated at a modest 115hp and 155lb-ft. of torque. This engine was also used by Ford in 1984 and 1985 in the Lincoln Mark VII Coupe.
Like the modern 335d, the 524td was exclusively equipped with an automatic transmission. Thanks to depreciation examples can now be had for $2,000. If you own one, just don't try and drag race the 335d.
