Up in smoke: CAW members burn Chrysler executive letter
Apr 19, 2009 Would Tom LaSorda's father, a former president of CAW Local 444, be proud of his son or proud of the union?
CAW Local 444 members were among Chrysler workers that received a letter from Chrysler CEO Bob Nardelli and president Tom LaSorda asking members to accept more concessions or risk seeing their jobs eliminated.
CAW members didn't like what they read and LaSorda must be asking himself if he's doing the right thing.
In a move that only exemplifies how far apart the CAW and Chrysler have become, hundreds of CAW members "ratified" to burn their letters. Workers want to see what executives have given up before they even consider taking more concessions.
If the union refuses additional concessions Chrysler execs have repeatedly warned they'll pull the Canadian manufacturing operations.
The two sides start negotiations tomorrow and must have a deal by May 1st to continue receiving government funding.
