City of Toronto promises to buy 300 hybrid and electric vehicles by 2013

David Miller, the Mayor of Toronto, announced last week that the City of Toronto will purchase nearly 300 hybrid and electric vehicles within the next 4 years.

The announcement took place at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark. Other cities made similar commitments, including London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, São Paulo and Sydney.

Mayor Miller said Toronto will add hybrid and electric vehicles to its fleet as it retires older, less fuel efficient vehicles.

The schedule is as follows:

2010 - 40 vehicles
2011 - 60 vehicles
2012 - 70 vehicles
2013 - 120 vehicles
