Chrysler developing a dual-clutch transmission
Oct 9, 2006
Throughout the last few years, the dual-clutch gearbox has increased in popularity. Motorists enjoy the smooth shifting and economical fuel consumption, while enthusiasts appreciate the technology and quick gear changes. Due to its increasing popularity, Chrysler is planning to offer a dual-clutch transmission on its mid-size vehicles in the coming years. Currently only the Volkswagen group is the only company selling vehicles with the technology in America.
DaimlerChrysler has decided to invest $560 million in a new assembly plant in Kokomo, Indiana to manufacturer the dual-clutch transmission. Partnering with Getrag, the automaker plans on creating 700,000 units annually, with production set to begin in 2009. The models that will benefit from the new transmission are primarily front-wheel drive vehicles, including the Avenger, Sebring and minivans.
