Loblaw testing hybrid truck to reduce carbon footprint

Canada's largest food distributor, Loblaw Companies Limited, has set a target to improve the fuel efficiency of its corporate transport fleet by two per cent compared to its 2009 level. To do that they're testing a hybrid class 8 truck from PeterBilt.

"We constantly challenge ourselves in all areas of our business against our corporate social responsibility principles. The hybrid truck pilot is one of the many initiatives undertaken in our supply chain to meet our fuel economy goals for 2010. We believe we are on the right track to once again lower fuel consumption and carbon emissions associated with the transportation of goods to our stores," said Robert Wiebe, senior vice president, Supply Chain, Loblaw Companies Limited.

Manitoba gets $10 million Honda dealership

$10,000,000 is a lot of money but that's what Ashok Dilawri invested in his latest dealership, Crown Honda, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The 39,000 sq. ft. dealership follows Honda Canada's Powerhouse concept, a concept which puts automobiles, motorcycles, ATVs, outboard motors and Honda's power equipment under one roof.

Fiat 500 spotted in Toronto

The Fiat 500 won't be available in Canada until late this year or early next but I spotted one this weekend parked in Toronto's trendy King West neighbourhood. In fact, if you live in Toronto or Montreal you have a good chance of checking one out for yourself.

According to ciaofiat.ca, the 500 will be on display throughout Toronto and Montreal to help build buzz in advance of going on sale. You can follow Fiat500Canada's tweets for specific information on where and when the car will be on display.

And this wasn't the only new small car spotted in Toronto this weekend.

Subaru Canada lowers pricing on '11 WRX STI

It's a good thing when an automaker tweaks a model for more performance. That's what Subaru has done with the '11 WRX STI. Stiffer springs, thicker stabilizer bars and lighter Enkei wheels are amongst the subtle changes that help the WRX STI return to its roots as a no compromise performance machine.

But a lower price to boot? Well that just sweetens the deal.

The WRX STI 4-door starts at $37,995, $2,000 less than the 2010 WRX STI. A 2011 WRX STI 5-door starts at $38,895, $1,100 less than last year.

WRX pricing remains on par with 2010, impressive considering the added equipment and new wide-body design.

Nissan Canada announces Juke pricing

To say the Nissan Juke is uniquely styled is like saying a smart car is small. It's true but grossly understated. So while the interweb has been abuzz with opinions of auto enthusiasts regarding the Juke's appearance, the big question is whether the Juke will resonate with consumers, the actual people considering this segment with money to spend.

Nissan's hoping they spend their money on a Juke. Does a starting price of $19,998 CAD sound good to you?

Nissan Canada's complete press release after the juke jump.

Ridiculously high mileage allowance under review at Toronto City Hall

According to the CAA's annual Driving Costs brochure, a Chevrolet Cobalt costs 12.60 cents to operate per kilometer. A Dodge Caravan costs 16.80 cents. This cost takes into account fuel, maintenance and tires.

While most companies reimburse employees more than that amount, few if any can match the generosity the City of Toronto bestows upon employees with a mileage allowance of 52 cents each and every kilometer.

Drive 100km a month on city business for 47 weeks of the year? You're looking at almost $2,500 in reimbursement.

But things may change, if only slightly.

World's oldest Plymouth returns home to Windsor, ON

The oldest known Plymouth is returning to Windsor 83 years after rolling off an assembly line in that very city. The car, which was last licensed in 1954 in Saskatchewan, was purchased this weekend from an auction in Alberta.

“Windsor up to recently was certainly the automotive capital of Canada and for this to be the oldest car available or known and have it made in Windsor, I thought that was just really neat,” said new owner Michael Hunter to The Windsor Star.

Canadian stuck in Cuba after rental car crash to return home

About a month ago we told you about Cody LeCompte, a 19 year old Canadian who was being held in Cuba after the rental car he was driving was struck by a truck.

While LeCompte was not at fault, he's been forced to stay in Cuba since April while officials decided whether he should stand trial.

Thankfully LeCompte can start putting this difficult chapter behind him as political pressure from the Canadian government has persuaded the Cuban government to let him return to Canada.
