Canadian auto sales up 0.5%

Canadian automakers reported a slight rise in sales overall in August. Data compiled by DesRosiers Automotive Consultants indicated that overall Canadian auto sales were essentially flat in August at 136,069, a gain of 0.5 per cent from a year earlier.

DesRosiers' numbers suggested that consumer incentives helped drive up sales of light trucks — including sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks — to 75,131, a gain of 12.2 per cent, while passenger car sales dropped 10.9 per cent to 60,938.

Oakville, Ontario-based Ford Canada said sales rose eight per cent from the same month a year earlier, to 24,034 cars and light trucks. That made it Ford's best August in 20 years and kept the company in top place in Canada.

Toyota's Canadian sales fell 29.5 per cent to 12,862 as the company continued to feel the impact of a series of problems that have seen more than 10 million vehicles recalled worldwide in the past year.

It's certainly been a turbulent year. For full sales results, hit the jump.

Possible New Trend: Police officers parking in disabled spots across Canada

So, is this the new trend for Canadian police officers or what? Remember not too long ago when we told you about the New Brunswick police offer who parked in a disabled parking spot? Well, it looks like the unlawful officer in Fredricton is not alone.

Just this week, a Toronto police officer was seen parked in a disabled spot outside of a Tim Hortons near Caledonia Road and Lawrence Avenue West. Melissa Goncalves was getting a late-night coffee when she witnessed, and photographed, what happened.

Updated on Aug 26, 2010 by Registered CommenterPeter Johnson

Honda is reportedly ready to axe two hybrid models in Canada.

Kurt Browning sets his Porsche on fire while trying to dry seats

Maybe the first thing Canadian figure skating champion Kurt Browning should have tried was turning on the seat heaters...or even just letting the car air out.

Well it turns out Browning was slightly impatient and decided to speed things up. In the process, he accidentally set fire to his Forest Hill mansion in a disastrous attempt to dry the seats of his convertible Porsche. Apparently, the car had been left out in the rain with the top down. According to Toronto Fire, a leaf blower was used to do the job. Interesting idea!

This is scheduled to commence at the Etobicoke plant in the third quarter of 2011.
